Hi, Jonas,

I use Mirra (http://www.mirra.com) on both Mac and Windows. It's perfect for my needs and you might like it too. It's a network appliance that provides completely hands-off file backup, automatically synchronizes files across platforms, and remote file access. (I don't use the latter, but my wife likes it.)

This is expensive but well worth it. I'm always protected and I don't have to do anything or remember to run a back up. The only downside is that it doesn't work when you're away from your home or office network, but it automatically backs up everything that's out of date whenever you reconnect.

Cheers,
Jim

Anyway, I think that if (big if) I’ll have a bit of time that I’ll take a look at the S3 REST api and see if it’s not too much work to write a console client that does incremental backup with archiving of old versions. That would be ideal!

If you pull something like that together, let me know - and I'll switch.

Take care, Jonas.

Thanks a lot Jonas, I did try out Jungledisk too. As you say, it's not really appropriate since it's GUI only and the format is proprietary. Also, I noticed that it was much slower than jets3t. Uploading files seems extremely slow in Jungledisk. Anyway, I think that if (big if) I'll have a bit of time that I'll take a look at the S3 REST api and see if it's not too much work to write a console client that does incremental backup with archiving of old versions.

Well.

I am using jets3t for my day to day work. SVN, docs etc. For this it works excellent. But I did experience problems when trying to upload my entire music and photo collection on +50 G. It seemed to have a problem with too many open files.

For this I am using JungleDisk. It is pretty good and seems stable. But has its proprietary file format so it is not possible to use these files with other tools or to share them with friends (using public URLs or Torrents). Which is bad. Another problem is tha it is only a GUI app.

It works for both Win and Mac, runs its own local WebDAV server.

Try if it works better for you: http://www.jungledisk.com/

The Mac version does not support diff yet (in the pipeline they say), but the Win version does. I have not used it for more than 2 weeks now, but it seems to do the job.

These two combined sums it up well for me.

I got that as well. But it is easily fixed by setting -Xms512m -Xmx512m or whatever works for you, in the cockpit.sh file.

I've been playing with jets3t, but when uploading directories with many files I get an OutOfMemoryError. Do you get the same? I'm thinking this maybe needs some custom development.

Hi Jonas,

thanks a lot for having pointed me to this. I was just in the process of looking for an offsite backup solution and this looks very neat.

Take care,
